Course Description

The JH Dementia Care Specialist Certification modules includes foundational knowledge of Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementia and best practices for disease management. The course includes a pre- and post- knowledge test and engages learners through videos, realistic problem-based scenarios, case studies, and quiz activities to apply concepts and knowledge learned.

Tier 1 of the JH Dementia Care Specialist Certification Training Bundle includes an online, 3-hour course consisting of 6 learning modules:


  • Module 1: Causes, Symptoms, and Risk factors for Alzheimer’s Disease and related Dementias
  • Module 2: Diagnosing Dementia including use of Validated Cognitive Screening Tools
  • Module 3: Best Practices for Managing Dementia and Associated Behaviors
  • Module 4: Health Care Needs and Navigating the health care system
  • Module 5: Assessing and Addressing Home and Personal Safety
  • Module 6: Supporting Caregivers and Connecting to Community Resources

Upon conclusion of the Tier 1 online course, learners will obtain a certificate of completion and will be able to enroll in the Tier 2 online course.  


After successfully completing the course, learners will receive a certificate of completion from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Memory and Aging Services Innovation Center.

Learning Prerequisites

There are no specific course prerequisites. You will need to have English language fluency.

Technical Prerequisites

The course will take place on the Canvas LMS ( You will need the ability to log on to the platform, preferably using Google Chrome, to complete the content, which will include videos, readings, and assignments. You may also need to take part in other activities on

  • Hardware requirements: computer; webcam; microphone and speakers or headset.
  • Software requirements: Google Chrome web browser; access to; Zoom web conferencing; Microsoft Office or similar; email

Course Lifecycle and Access

After registering, you will receive an email confirming your registration. You will be granted access to the course, which includes complete course information. Please check the course listing for additional information on course access dates. For synchronous courses, learners will have access to the Canvas course for the duration of the course. For asynchronous courses, learners will have access for 180 days after registration. 

Tuition Remission

This course may qualify for tuition remission. Please check for guidelines. If you are interested in using tuition remission, please email the OOE support email with your request.

Refund Policy and Timeline

  • Synchronous Courses
    • Refunds may be requested up to the start of the live activity, unless otherwise noted. All refund requests will incur a 10% processing fee.
  • Asynchronous Courses
    • Refunds are not allowed for active asynchronous courses.
