Course Description

The online Adult ICU Rehabilitation Foundations Course has 17 recorded presentations and is divided into 4 themes:

Rationale and Evidence for Early Rehabilitation,
Implementing and Sustaining an ICU Rehabilitation Program,
Specialized Assessment and Intervention, and
Medical Interventions.

The Adult ICU Rehabilitation Foundations Course is designed to provide foundational knowledge that is essential for effective collaboration and coordination to facilitate early mobility and rehabilitation in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. This course aims to breakdown ‘silos’ among critical care and rehabilitation clinicians working in the ICU, through interdisciplinary education. Moreover, the course provides insights into creating an ICU culture based on proactive rehabilitation and interdisciplinary collaboration between all critical care and rehabilitation clinicians.

Although this course can be viewed on a stand-alone basis, it is a pre-requisite for our annual “latest updates” Conference, the Johns Hopkins Critical Care Rehabilitation Conference, which is offered in-person at the Johns Hopkins Hospital each fall (get more information at www.ICURehabNetwork.org). We strongly encourage anyone who attends our in-person Conference, to have completed this course first the Conference only covers the “latest updates” from the past year, rather than foundational concepts.

Who Should Attend

This course is intended for physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, respiratory therapists, physiatrists, ICU physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, psychologists, and psychiatrists.

Format & Content

The course has 5.5 hours of recorded presentations, with an accompanying pdf copy of the presentation slides (excluding copyright material and patient images). As its focus is on foundational material, the content of this course does not change from year to year. Hence, if you have attended this course in the past, there is no need to attend again.

Course Expiration

The course is available for unlimited viewing for 180 days after your purchase date.

Course Objectives

Describe ICU-acquired muscle weakness and implications for long-term patient outcomes.
Appraise the foundational evidence for early rehabilitation and mobility in critically ill adults.
Describe and discuss how to change ICU culture and clinical practice to implement early rehabilitation programs for critically ill adults.
Explain evidence, clinical practice, and interdisciplinary roles of nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, and respiratory therapy in an adult ICU rehabilitation program.
Explain rehabilitation-related assessments and interventions for adult ICU patients.
Explain the principles of clinical decision-making, including issues related to relevant medications, mechanical ventilation, medical devices and monitoring, for safe early rehabilitation in the ICU.
Describe the management of sedation and delirium, and related cognitive assessments and interventions, for adult ICU patients

CEUs

The Adult ICU Rehabilitation Foundations course does not offer automatic CEUs for registrants. Upon completion of the course, you will complete a very brief survey to generate your certificate of completion. On an individual basis, you may be able to use the certificate of completion to self-submit to your own accreditation body for your CEU. Note: the 2-day Johns Hopkins Critical Care Rehabilitation Conference at Johns Hopkins Hospital does offer CEU, similar to prior years.

Certificate

After successfully completing the course, learners will receive a certificate of completion from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. On an individual basis, you may be able to use this certificate of completion to self-submit to your own accreditation body for Continuing Education Credit.

Learning Prerequisites

There are no specific course prerequisites. You will need to have English language fluency.

Technical Prerequisites

The course will take place on the Canvas LMS (Canvas.jhu.edu). You will need the ability to log on to the platform, preferably using Google Chrome, to complete the content, which will include video presentations and downloadable presentation handouts.

Software requirements: Google Chrome web browser; access to Canvas.jhu.edu; Zoom web conferencing; Microsoft Office or similar; email

Course Lifecycle and Access

After registering, you will receive an email confirming your registration. You will be granted access to the course, which includes complete course information. Please check the course listing for additional information on course access dates. For synchronous courses, learners will have access to the Canvas course for the duration of the course. For asynchronous courses, learners will have access for 180 days after registration.

Synchronous Courses
- Refunds may be requested up to the start of the live activity, unless otherwise noted. All refund requests will incur a 10% processing fee.
